Tour Overview

This ruggedly mountainous country, which Portuguese sailors named Ilha Formosa, the beautiful island, has long attracted invaders and settlers, including the Dutch, the Spanish and the Japanese, but mainly those from the Chinese Mainland, who mixed with the indigenous peoples to create a colourful cultural mosaic, one of the highlights of this fascinating island.

In many of our minds Taiwan is known for its manufacturing prowess and perhaps for being an irritant to its larger neighbour, as it moved rapidly from martial law to its own style of modern democracy. However, the country boasts a rich treasure house of traditions, having not suffered the same degree of devastation brought about by war and revolution in Mainland China, so that its old towns are perhaps more traditional, its monasteries more ancient and its museums house a vast quantity of Chinese treasure, whisked away by Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists.

The island is also a trove of natural scenic splendours, from its fertile western flatlands to its pristine mountains and unspoilt, craggy east coast.

Our comprehensive 17-night circular tour of the island allows us to discover its history, culture, peoples and produce in depth and at a leisurely pace. We learn how Taiwan has preserved its ancient traditions but embraced modernity: an intriguing mix for the curious traveller.

This program includes placeswhich can only be explored on foot and where walking tours may be a little longer and not always on the flat. Accommodation may have some stairs and or have some rooms which may involve some walking to access.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.
If you have any concerns at all about your level of fitness, please do not hesitate to talk to us and discuss further with the experts who know the particular demands of each program.
