Tour Overview

Follow in the footsteps of early explorers and pioneers along the three famous Outback tracks of Oodnadatta, Birdsville and Strzelecki. All are remote, harsh but beautiful 4WD Tracks steeped in history. Be transported back in time as you hear tales of the people who opened up this great vast country with stories of hardship, strength, family values and the Australian pioneering spirit. Sleep in the unique Desert Cave Hotel in Coober Pedy and experience perhaps the best night’s sleep you’ve had in a long time. We also overnight at William Creek, the smallest settlement in South Australia with a population of three humans and a dog. It is part of the largest cattle station in the world – Anna Creek, approximately the land area of England. We venture to the magnificent Lake Eyre, Australia’s largest inland lake. Also included is the not to be missed spectacular champagne sunset on top of ‘Big Red’, a 40-metre sand dune at the edge of the great Simpson Desert. Explore the Outback town of Birdsville, just across the Queensland / South Australia border and stay at its famous and historic 133-year-old pub, the Birdsville Hotel. Hear the tragic story of explorers Burke & Wills and view the ‘Dig Tree’ in Innamincka, discover the ancient beauty of Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and the famous Ridgetop tour and explore the unforgettable Flinders Ranges including the geological wonder of Wilpena Pound.

David Mobbs

David Mobbs is a Territorian, with 30 years of tour guiding experience. He grew up on cattle stations and in Aboriginal communities and gained a respect and understanding of the land and culture from an early age. He was one of the first to lead Kakadu tours, had 4 years guiding in Central Australia and has been taking Kimberley safaris to the region for over 25 years, so he’s likely to be the most experienced guide in Northern Australia. With extensive knowledge in Aboriginal rock art and culture, bush tucker, flora, fauna, natural history and geology, David has assisted in the making of several documentary programs, including ‘The World Around Us’ on such networks as CNN and the BBC. He has also been an advisor for several books on the Top End.

This program includes places which can only be explored on foot and where walking tours may be a little longer and not always on the flat. Accommodation may have some stairs and or have some rooms which may involve some walking to access.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.
If you have any concerns at all about your level of fitness, please do not hesitate to talk to us and discuss further with the experts who know the particular demands of each program.
