Find a Tour

Dear Educational Travellers and Friends,

Crossing the Nullarbor, South Australia

It has been three months since our last newsletter, and we hope this finds you still safe and well. The health and safety of our participants and our wonderful Golden Compass team is always of paramount importance to us.

We have intentionally kept the frequency of our newsletters to a minimum, as our priority has been to focus on those participants who had been due to depart on our many international tours during this second half of 2020.

In recent months many of you have been in touch with us to let us know how you are getting on, to share enjoyable Golden Compass trip memories and to express your deep desire to get back on the road, travelling the globe whenever it becomes possible and safe to do so. Thanks for keeping in touch with us, and we are sincerely grateful for those inspiring exchanges and hopeful messages.

Since our company’s inception 25 years ago, our focus has always been to expose and connect Australian and New Zealander travellers to other cultures through travel: we remain committed to the principle that travel is an inspiring life-long learning experience for self-enrichment.

Giant Tingle Tree, Walpole, Western Australia

With a positive focus on the future, we are looking forward to providing you with exciting travel experiences for many more years. We are currently finalising our range of tours for 2021 and 2022, including new and exciting local destinations throughout Australia and New Zealand. This information will shortly appear on our website and via newsletters, but just to give you a taste of what is to come:

Within Australia, especially while international travel is not a possibility, we have created tours in both South Australia and Western Australia, as well as designing a completely new tour in Tasmania, while also ensuring we have sufficient capacity for our regular program to Norfolk Island. We also have our sought-after ‘Journey through New Zealand’ tour program ready to go, as soon as travel is permitted across the so-called Ditch.

Lake Pukaki, near Mt Cook, New Zealand

Once it’s safe to travel to Asia, we will relaunch our popular Asian tours to Japan, Singapore, Bhutan, ‘The Stans’, Korea and along China’s Silk Road, as well as to Tibet. We will then gradually re-introduce our tours to India, Sri Lanka, Iran and Oman. We are also developing new programs to Israel and Jordan as well as a new and exciting tour of Taiwan. In Africa, we will relaunch our tour of Morocco, including a few special features, but also bring back tours of South Africa and of Namibia. We are also introducing a fascinating and comprehensive tour of Ethiopia. In the Americas, we plan to introduce a new tour of Chile, Bolivia and Peru in 2022, together with in-depth tours of Mexico and Cuba. Meanwhile in Europe, we plan to revive our much-loved favourites, such as our Alpine Discovery and our Adriatic Discovery followed by the reintroduction of tours to Iceland with Greenland; Scotland; Greece; the Caucasus; the Balkans; Bulgaria and Romania; Spain; Portugal; Germany and Italy.

Arthurs Pass, New Zealand

If 'lockdown' has rekindled your interest or passion for gardens, we are developing a new tour of Madeira, also a tour of ‘The Golden Age of Art and Gardens’, featuring The Netherlands, Belgium and Northern France highlighting a visit to that very special decennial Dutch horticultural event, ‘Floriade’. We are also planning to repeat our much-loved visit to the UK’s spectacular Chelsea Flower Show. For those keen to get back to the performing arts, we plan to re-feature our stunning ‘Summer of British Showstoppers’ including Shakespeare’s Stratford, opera at Glyndebourne and the ‘Proms’ in London.

Our stunning Hapsburg Cities tour, suspended because of the current 2020 lockdown and showcasing the Passion Play in Oberammergau, will operate in 2022. There will also be new and relaxing tours of Italy and of France for those keen to revisit their favourite haunts.

As you may gather, we are really enjoying planning an exciting range of tours for our return to travel beyond our shores and believe we have come up with a great mix of much-loved favourites and fascinating new destinations. However, please let us know if you would like us to create a tour to destinations you have been yearning to visit, so that we can consider them in our planning mix!

As we mentioned in our last newsletter, although no one has any idea when the threat of the virus will pass, it will – and when it does, we will be here, ready and eager to welcome you on another Golden Compass tour packed with fulfillment.

In the meantime, stay safe and continue to dream about the day when we can freely and safely explore this big beautiful world again.
