Tour Overview

Few destinations in the world offer the variety of cultural and natural landscape of Mexico. From its vast volcanic mountain range, to its Central Plateau where Mexico City lies, to the coastal region of the Yucatan Peninsula, it is a country of great cultural diversity and ancient history. Dating back over 3,000 years, we learn about the ancient civilisations which originally inhabited this land: the Olmec, Zapotec Maya and, later, the Aztec. All were highly sophisticated cultures with great achievements in art, architecture, mathematics and astronomy. In Mexico City, we explore one of the world's most vibrant, cosmopolitan and dynamic urban centres. We visit the halls of the renowned National Museum of Anthropology to learn of Mexico’s ancient past, and we also explore the art of the Mexican Muralists, who painted this history on the public walls of Mexico’s cultural institutions between the 1920s and 1950s, a period following the Mexican Revolution.

We continue to the neighbouring colonial city of Puebla, City of the Angels. Puebla is known for its important role in Mexico's Colonial Period (1500-1800), where architecture, art and cuisine developed singular expressions. We visit 'talavera' artisans (Majolica tile) and savour unique regional dishes. We also visit extraordinary churches that are unlike any you have seen before, blending Mexico’s ancient indigenous past with Catholic traditions.

Leaving the Central Plateau of Mexico, we travel to Merida and the completely different world of the Yucatecan Maya. We explore the vast Maya ruins of Uxmal and World Heritage listed Chichen-Itza, where we not only realise the complexity of these civilisations, but also meet the living Maya, who are part of this 3,000 year legacy.

To be advised

This program includes placeswhich can only be explored on foot and where walking tours may be a little longer and not always on the flat. Accommodation may have some stairs and or have some rooms which may involve some walking to access.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.
If you have any concerns at all about your level of fitness, please do not hesitate to talk to us and discuss further with the experts who know the particular demands of each program.
